De niña a madre

/ Girls to Mothers

2006, Florence Jaugey
70 Mins.
Feature Documentary

Follow the lives of three adolescent mothers as they grapple with motherhood in rural Nicaragua. This documentary by Belgian filmmaker Florence Jaugey won the prestigious Dirkvandersypen Award in Belgium, as well as a UNICEF UK Award at the Human Rights Documentary Film Festival in Glasgow. In "De niña a madre" Jaugey skillfully captures the ongoing triumphs and struggles of Kenia, Vivian and Blanca over the course of three years through thought-provoking and often shocking interviews with these young women, their mothers, and the young fathers of their children. Watch as the three young women attempt to balance their hopes and dreams with the difficult realities of life as adolescent mothers in a traditional Nicaraguan community. Heartfelt footage cuts through the complex social dynamics that pressure so many young Nicaraguan women to surrender their lives to the expectations of those in their community.
